Round-Competitive Algorithms for Uncertainty Problems with Parallel Queries

چکیده

Abstract In computing with explorable uncertainty, one considers problems where the values of some input elements are uncertain, typically represented as intervals, but can be obtained using queries. Previous work has considered query minimization in settings queries asked sequentially (adaptive model) or all at once (non-adaptive model). We introduce a new model k made parallel each round, and goal is to minimize number rounds. Using competitive analysis, we present upper lower bounds on rounds required by any algorithm comparison optimal for given instance. Given set uncertain family m subsets that set, study sorting determining minimum value (or element(s)) subset. also selection problem, i.e., problem i -th smallest identifying elements. Our results include 2-round-competitive algorithms an uses most $$(2+\varepsilon ) \cdot \mathrm {opt}_k+\mathrm {O}\left( \frac{1}{\varepsilon } \lg m\right) $$ ( 2 + ε ) · opt k O 1 lg m every $$0<\varepsilon <1$$ 0 < , $$\mathrm {opt}_k$$

Query-Competitive Algorithms for Cheapest Set Problems under Uncertainty

Considering the model of computing under uncertainty where element weights are uncertain but can be obtained at a cost by query operations, we study the problem of identifying a cheapest (minimumweight) set among a given collection of feasible sets using a minimum number of queries of element weights. For the general case we present an algorithm that makes at most d · OPT + d queries, where d i...

Parallel algorithms for continuous multifacility competitive location problems

We consider a continuous location problem in which a firm wants to set up two or more new facilities in a competitive environment. Both the locations and the qualities of the new facilities are to be found so as to maximize the profit obtained by the firm. This hard-to-solve global optimization problem has been addressed in [38] using several heuristic approaches. Through a comprehensive comput...

Competitive Algorithms for Server Problems

The k-server problem is that of planning the motion of k mobile servers on the vertices of a graph under a sequence of requests for service. Each request consists of the name of a vertex, and is satisfied by placing a server at the requested vertex. The requests must be satisfied in their order of occurrence. The cost of satisfying a sequence of requests is the distance moved by the servers. In...

Round Compression for Parallel Matching Algorithms

The last decade has witnessed the success of a number of massive parallel computation (MPC) frameworks, such as MapReduce, Hadoop, Dryad, or Spark. These frameworks allow for much more local memory and computation, compared to the classical distributed or PRAM models. In this context, we investigate the complexity of one of the most fundamental graph problems: MaximumMatching. We show that if t...

Experiments with Parallel Algorithms for Combinatorial Problems

In the last decade many models for parallel computation have been proposed and many parallel algorithms have been developed. However, few of these models have been realized and most of these algorithms are supposed to run on idealized, unrealistic parallel machines. The parallel machines constructed so far all use a simple model of parallel computation. Therefore, not every existing parallel ma...
